Drama classes for students entering Gr. 7-12 take place at YPT’s brand new education centre, YPT 161 Studios, as well as Etobicoke’s Assembly Hall. See Gr. 7-12 class details and locations below.

Session 1: September – December 2025

In Session 1 students will…

• Develop core theatre performance skills in movement, voice and character creation
• Develop confidence and creativity through drama exercises, games and improv activities
• Work with their peers and artist educators to create a presentation for the Mid-Year Performance in December 2025
• Make new friends – and have fun!
• Final performances take place on the weekend of December 13-14, 2025 in the Studio Theatre
• Please note there are no classes on October 11, 2025.

Session 2: February – June 2026

*NEW* 13-week program!

We are thrilled to expand our second session to 13 weeks to give students more time to refine their skills and create spectacular performances. Prices for Session 2 reflect the additional class hours.

In Session 2 students will…

• Build upon their performance skills from Session 1 and learn how to transform their theatrical ideas into a performance!
• Continue to expand their movement, voice, character creation, and improv skills through new exercises and activities specially connected to performing for an audience (projection, stage presence etc.)
• Expand their confidence
• Collaborate with peers to create their own play performed on a YPT stage the final weekend of the session
• Make new friends – and have fun!
• Final performances take place on the weekend of June 6-7, 2026
• Please note there are no classes on March 21, April 4 and May 16, 2026.

New students are welcome throughout the year; however each session builds upon the last. Enrolling in both sessions provides the most comprehensive learning experience.

Grade 7-8 Classes

Scene Study (Gr. 7-8)

Scene Study for Gr. 9-12 is designed to take students on a journey exploring a professional play, from script to performing scenes. It is aimed towards Drama School students who want to expand their acting experience and abilities by working with professional plays.

Students will…

• Learn how to read and perform with a script
• Work with their peers to explore two-hander and group scenes
• Be directed by a professional director
• Expand on their learning from their standard YPT drama class and add new tools to their actor’s tool kit
• Develop their theatrical performance skills, have fun, and perform a scripted scene on a YPT stage at the end of the session!

Scenes Study (Grade 7-8) is designed as a supplementary program for students in the standard Gr. 7-8 class who are interested in further building their theatrical skills. Enrolling in the standard Gr. 7-8 class is highly recommended as it provides the foundation for expanding their learning in this additional class.

Musical Theatre (Gr. 7-12)

Musical Theatre classes combine learning drama, dance and music. These classes are perfect for students who want a range of performance experience and want to explore singing, music and movement.

In this class, students will:

• Develop their singing, dancing and acting skills under the guidance of artist educators
• Refine their techniques in singing, dancing and acting through foundational exercises in all three disciplines
• Collaborate with peers to foster teamwork and build confidence
• Bring songs and scenes inspired by professional musicals to life
• Make new friends and have fun!

Acting for Film (Grade 7-12)

Acting for Film (Grade 7-12) provides students with an introduction to acting for the screen. Students will learn the process of breaking down a scene, creating a self-tape and auditioning. At the end of the session, students will have the opportunity to showcase their filmed scenes to friends and family!

In this class, students will:

• Work with an artist educator to guide them in breaking down a scene
• Develop their acting skills
• Learn about the auditioning process
• Collaborate with peers to foster teamwork and build confidence
• Host a screening of their scenes for friends and family at the end of the session
• Play drama games, meet new friends and have fun!
