Drama classes for students entering Gr. 3-4 take place at YPT’s 161 Studios, as well as Etobicoke’s Assembly Hall. See class details below.

Session 1: September – December 2025

In Session 1 students will…

• Develop core theatre performance skills in movement, voice and character creation
• Develop confidence and creativity through drama exercises, games and improv activities
• Work with their peers and artist educators to create a presentation for the Mid-Year Performance in December 2025
• Make new friends – and have fun!
• Final performances take place on the weekend of December 13-14, 2025 in the Studio Theatre at YPT
• Please note there are no classes on October 11, 12 & 15, 2025.

Session 2: February – June 2026

*NEW* 13-week program!

We are thrilled to expand our second session to 13 weeks to give students more time to practice their skills and feel confident performing. Prices for Session 2 reflect the additional class hours.

In Session 2 students will…

• Build upon their performance skills from Session 1 and learn how to transform their theatrical ideas into a performance!
• Continue to expand their movement, voice, character creation, and improv skills through new exercises and activities specially connected to performing for an audience (projection, stage presence etc.)
• Expand their confidence
• Collaborate with peers to create their own play performed on a YPT stage the final weekend of the session
• Make new friends – and have fun!
• Final performances take place on the weekend of June 6-7, 2026
• Please note there are no classes on March 18, 21 & 22, April 4, 5 & 8 and May 16, 17 & 20, 2026.

New students are welcome throughout the year; however each session builds upon the last. Enrolling in both sessions provides the most comprehensive learning experience.

Gr. 3-4 Drama

NEW! Improv (Gr. 3-4)

Improv classes are designed for students who love to play, imagine, and think on their feet. In this energetic and laughter-filled class, students will explore the basics of improvisation through games, storytelling, and scene-building — learning how to create characters and scenes in the moment!

In this class, students will:

• Learn key improv skills such as “Yes, and,” listening, and making choices
• Build spontaneous scenes using creativity and teamwork
• Develop confidence, communication, and quick thinking
• Work together to create fun, original moments on stage
• Share their new skills in a final improvised performance on the YPT stage for family and friends at the end of the session!

Musical Theatre (Gr. 3-4)

Musical Theatre classes combine drama, dance and music in a fun, engaging environment. Perfect for young performers who love to move, sing, and use their imaginations, this class introduces students to the world of musical theatre through playful exploration and creative expression. The term culminates in a performance on the YPT stage for family and friends!

In this class, students will:

• Explore singing, dancing and acting through drama games and activities
• Learn foundational techniques in acting, singing and dancing
• Work together with classmates to build confidence and creativity
• Bring songs and scenes inspired by professional musicals to life
• Make new friends and have fun!

Play Performance (Gr. 4-6)

Play Performance is designed for students in Grades 4-6 who are interested in working on a scripted play. Artist educators will select a script and, over the course of the session, students will rehearse and bring their play to life.

In this class, students will:

• Experience bringing a play to life from script to stage
• Learn how to read and perform with a script
• Be directed by an artist educator
• Expand on their learning from their standard YPT drama class and add new tools to their actor’s toolkit
• Develop their theatrical skills, have fun and perform a scripted play on a YPT stage at the end of the session!

Play Performance is designed as a supplementary program for students in the standard Gr. 4-6 class who are interested in building their theatrical experience and skills further. Enrolling in the standard Gr.4-6 class is highly recommended as it provides the foundation for expanding their learning in this additional class.

NEW! Mini Ensemble (Gr. 4-6)

Mini Ensemble is a performance-based program for students in Grades 4–6 who are ready to take their theatrical technique to the next level! The ensemble meets from January to June, 2026. Admission is by application. For more details, click here.
